When The Journey Is Too Much
God Meets Us in Our Weakness
And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. — 1 Kings 19:7
There are many times I do not want to admit my limitations. I catch myself often saying that I am not as young as I used to be. The days of endless energy are gone, and the drive to push through no matter the obstacle is not what it once was. The truth is, I am learning that there are some things in life that are simply too much for me to handle on my own.
Elijah came to that same realization.
After a great victory on Mount Carmel, he found himself overwhelmed, discouraged, and exhausted. The same prophet who had stood boldly before kings now sat under a juniper tree, worn down by the weight of it all. The journey had become too much.
And God did not rebuke him.
He did not tell Elijah to try harder or push through. Instead, He met him in his weakness. He sent provision. He allowed him to rest. And then He gently called him to rise again, reminding him, “the journey is too great for thee.”
That statement is not a criticism. It is a truth. The journey is too great for us: on our own.
We often try to carry everything ourselves. Responsibilities, expectations, pressures, and burdens begin to stack up. We push forward, convincing ourselves that we can handle it. But there comes a point where we are forced to admit what God has always known: we were never meant to do this in our own strength.
God’s response to Elijah shows us something important. He does not abandon us in our weakness. He meets us there. He provides what we need for the next step, not the entire journey.
Sometimes, the most spiritual thing we can do is stop, rest, and receive what God is providing.
If you feel overwhelmed today — physically, emotionally, or spiritually — you are not alone. And you are not expected to carry it all. The same God who met Elijah will meet you.
The journey may be too great for you, but it is not too great for Him. Where are you trying to carry more than God ever intended you to carry alone?
If this devotional met you where you are today, you’re not alone. Someone else needs this same encouragement, too.
