The Best Thing
Don’t let another day pass you by without experiencing the best thing this life has to offer!
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. — John 3:16
There have been many good things to happen to me in my life. I will never forget the day that I married my wife. The anticipation, the joy, the sense that everything was about to change for the better. Or perhaps the day we adopted our son in China, watching him walk into that room and become ours in every sense of the word. Both are days that I carry with me everywhere I go. Both changed my life in ways I could not have fully prepared for.
And yet neither of them is the best thing that ever happened to me. The best thing happened when I was twelve years old. The day I accepted Christ as my Savior.
I realize that for some people, that statement might seem like an overreach. How could a childhood decision outrank a marriage or an adoption? How could a moment that most of the world did not witness or even notice surpass the most significant milestones a life can hold?
Because none of those other moments change eternity. This one did.
John 3:16 is the most recognized verse in all of Scripture. It has appeared on signs and bumper stickers and stadium banners for generations. And because of its familiarity, it is possible to read it without feeling the full weight of what it actually says.
God loved. So He gave. His only Son. So that whoever believes would not perish, but have everlasting life.
That is not a transaction. That is not a religious system or a moral code or a set of rules to follow. That is a Father giving the most precious thing He had so that people who had no claim on Him could be brought into relationship with Him forever. The cost was everything. The offer is open to anyone. And the result, for those who believe, is life that does not end.
My wedding day was extraordinary. But my marriage, as much as I treasure it, is bound to this life. My adoption story is one of the most beautiful things I have ever been part of. But even that bond, as real and permanent as it feels, exists within the limits of time.
Salvation has no such limits.
What happened when I was twelve years old was not just a decision I made. It was a transaction that Heaven recorded. A name written down. A life redirected not just for years but for eternity. The day I accepted Christ was the day everything, past, present, and future. was placed under the covering of a grace that does not expire.
If you know that moment in your own life, you understand exactly what I mean. There is nothing that compares to it. Not the best day of your life. Not the greatest achievement you have ever reached. Not the relationship that changed everything. All of it is temporary. Only one thing is not.
And if you have not yet had that moment, if you have collected good days and meaningful memories but have never accepted what Christ did for you on the cross, then the best day of your life is still ahead of you.
It is available to anyone. Right now. Exactly as you are. For God so loved the world. That includes you. That has always included you.
The best thing that will ever happen to you is available today. Do not let another day pass without it.
