Responding in Love
When the World Reacts in Anger
Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. — Romans 13:10
Recently, I was driving down the road and witnessed something that seems to be happening more and more in our world. Two drivers were near each other and began yelling out their windows. Between stoplights, they swerved toward one another, sped up, slowed down, and eventually one driver cut off the other. What could have been a minor inconvenience quickly escalated into something far more dangerous.
It struck me how quickly frustration can turn into hostility.
In moments like that, it is easy to justify our reactions. Someone offends us. Someone inconveniences us. Someone acts carelessly. The temptation is to respond in kind, to match tone for tone, aggression for aggression. But Paul reminds us that love works no ill toward its neighbor.
Love does not seek harm. It does not retaliate. It does not escalate.
When Paul says that love fulfills the law, he is pointing to something deeper than rule-following. Love accomplishes what regulations alone cannot. Laws can restrain behavior, but love transforms the heart. Where love governs, harm diminishes.
The road incident was dramatic, but the same principle applies in quieter ways. Harsh words spoken in anger. Impatience toward family. Dismissiveness toward a coworker. The question is not simply whether we are right, but whether our response reflects love.
Love is not passive. It is deliberate. It chooses restraint over revenge, kindness over irritation, and patience over pride. In doing so, it honors God and protects others from harm.
We live in a world that often reacts quickly and loudly. But the believer is called to something different. Love works no ill. It refuses to injure, even when injured. It reflects Christ, who responded to hostility not with retaliation, but with grace. In what situation today might God be calling you to respond with love instead of reaction?
