But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. — Micah 5:2
Recently, I was reading a news article online that was sharing a bunch of different names. The article cited well-known cities and many popular people throughout. Many of these famous and influential people had settled into these well-known cities as their home, even if they were not born there.
The premise of the article was that these people were leaving their mark. They were creating influence in their cities and states. Some were politicians, while others were business people. Amid varying backgrounds and upbringings, they found a place and were making a difference.
As I read the article, I couldn’t help but think back on this verse in Micah 5, that talks about Bethlehem. It was a small city, little among the thousands of Judah as the verse shares. So small it wasn’t even mentioned counted as a prized possession of Judah.
Yet, that small city was the home town of a carpenter, who found himself forced to travel back to that small city to be taxed with the love of his life. Through that event and in that small town, the most influential person to ever live in this world was born. He wasn’t a salesman or a politician. He was the Savior.
Throughout time, people have sought to make Jesus what they want Him to be. Some want Him as a baby in a manger. Some want Him to be a simple story that is forgettable. The Jews rejected Him because He wasn’t the flashy and powerful person they thought He should be. Throughout history, others have view Him as an inconvenience.
Instead, He came in a lowly manger, in a small town that many would overlook. He didn’t come as what most would want Him to be. He came to be the Savior for all who will accept Him.
HaShem, Adonai, YHWH
We are too small to say the Creator's name. So we say the name of the son He gave to us and leads us to perfect salvation.
Jesus is the only form in which He has stood before us. In the garden, before Joshua as the commander of the army of the Lord, etc. And we can absolutely count on Jesus being with us on our last day here.
Wonderful thoughts on this quiet and still Christmas morning.
Thanks for all you do Jared. I start each day with a previous devotional from Another Well.
