God’s Expectations
Walking Humbly with God, Not Performing for Him
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? — Micah 6:8
Throughout my career, I have had several jobs. In each of those roles, I was given a list of expectations. These were the responsibilities I was accountable for and the standards I was expected to meet each day. Those expectations provided clarity, but they also carried weight. I knew what was required, and I knew I would be held accountable.
It can be tempting to view our relationship with God in the same way, as if He has given us a checklist to complete or a standard we must constantly strive to meet. Over time, that mindset can quietly turn faith into performance and obedience into pressure.
Micah reminds us that God’s expectations are different. He has already shown us what is good. His call is not complicated or burdensome. It is relational. To do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with Him. These are not tasks to complete, but postures of the heart that shape how we live.
Walking humbly with God means acknowledging our need for Him daily. It means allowing His grace to guide our choices and His mercy to shape how we treat others. God’s expectations are not meant to exhaust us, but to draw us closer to Him.
If faith feels heavy today, pause and remember this: God is not asking for perfection. He is inviting you to walk with Him. Obedience that flows from relationship brings freedom, not fear.
Where might you be carrying faith as a burden instead of walking with God in relationship?
